Château Borgeat de Lagrange

The Story of a Renaissance

Our adventure

Over the Years

A Family Promise

In 2020, a brother and sister, Tristan and Estelle, set their sights on what was once a jewel of Bordeaux: Château Lagrange. Before them stood a majestic neo-Gothic castle, yet it lay dormant, nearly forgotten by the world. Their hearts spoke. They saw, beyond the waiting walls, the soul of a place that yearned for just one thing: to reclaim its light. It was with this emotion and unshakeable determination that they embarked on their grandest adventure: to breathe life back into it, room by room, with the greatest respect for its history.

Bringing the Original Apartments Back to Life

From the very first year, the urgency was to restore the soul to the castle’s historic heart. We focused on the most prestigious private living quarters: the former apartments of the Marquis and Marquise. Each room was meticulously refurnished in the purest style of the era, piece by piece, fabric by fabric. The goal was clear: to revive the elegance and intimacy of these private spaces, so one could once again imagine hearing the whisper of history within them.

The Chapel: The Return of the Sacred

Adjoining the castle, another cornerstone of the heritage awaited its redemption: the chapel. Reduced for decades to a mere storage room, it received particular attention. Carefully refurnished and restored to its original purpose, it can now once again host moments of intimacy and ceremonies. Its magnificent stained-glass windows signed by Joseph Villet and its period wall paintings have been brought to light, making this haven of spirituality and art one of the most moving treasures of the estate.

The Setting of Yesteryear, the Comfort of Today

In the second year, Tristan and Estelle extended this rebirth to the entire upper floor. Each guest room was fully restored and equipped with its own private bathroom. The challenge? To blend essential contemporary comfort with authentic historic charm. The result: unique suites where one feels both like a privileged guest of the Marquis and enveloped in the understated luxury of the present. Every detail, from the fabrics to the furnishings, was conceived as a tribute to the 19th-century art of living.

The Salons, Witnesses to Restored Splendor

The following year saw the rebirth of the grand reception rooms, where each space regained the function and soul it possessed in the Marquis’s time. From the solemn dining room, ready for grand meals, to the intimate library with its shelves, and the grand reception salon with its imposing fireplace, each area was restored with absolute fidelity. The original parquet floors were meticulously restored, their patterns unveiled anew. The woodwork, once dulled, regained its luster. Then came the time for refurnishing, to recreate the exact atmosphere the Marquis’s guests would have known, in each salon dedicated to his art of living.

The Basement Revealed, a Spectacular Surprise

The restoration even managed to uncover the best-kept secrets. In the basement, a treasure lay dormant under decades of neglect: the castle’s original stonework, hidden for nearly half a century. Revealing it was a moment of intense emotion. This raw and authentic space, now enhanced, became the perfect place to host the ultimate stage of a visit: an incredible tasting cellar, where the magic of wine meets the primal strength of the stone.

The historic Vat House, a Heartbeat Restored

This year marks a culmination both symbolic and technical: the rebirth of the historic gravity-flow Wine Vat House. Silent for nearly 90 years, this cornerstone of winemaking has regained its breath and noble purpose. The project masterfully married the best of both worlds: respect for tradition, with the installation of traditional conical wooden vats, and essential modernity, thanks to temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The beautiful original stonework, patiently uncovered, now forms the raw and authentic setting for this rediscovered alchemy. To hear wine fermenting once again within these history-laden walls is to restore the estate’s original heartbeat, and to seal the eternal bond between the restored château and the excellence of its terroir.

Centuries of Heritage

A place of legend

Château Borgeat de Lagrange is a stunning neo-Gothic castle nestled in the heart of Blaye, surrounded by Bordeaux’s legendary vineyards and overlooking the scenic Gironde estuary. While most of the original 17th-century castle is long gone, you can still spot traces of its past—like an ancient turret marked 1641 and a historic fountain standing alone in the park.

In 1856, the Marquis de Lagrange—a respected senator, scholar, and high-ranking member of the French Legion of Honour—transformed the estate into a fairytale retreat. Designed by Bordeaux architect Gustave Alaux (a protégé of the legendary Viollet-le-Duc), the château is pure Gothic revival charm. Its grand structure features an octagonal tower with classic chequered detailing, a whimsical turret, and an array of eerie gargoyles and chimeras that give the place a storybook vibe. Connected to the old turret is a beautifully preserved chapel, decked out with exquisite stained glass and paintings that scream old-world luxury.

This place isn’t just a castle: it’s a mood.

The vineyard: A Legacy of Bordeaux Excellence

Back in the 19th century, this wasn’t just any vineyard—it was ranked. The estate’s wines earned serious cred, landing First Bourgeois status for its top-tier plots and Second Bourgeois for its palus (riverside) wines in 1868. These accolades weren’t just local hype—they were stamped into history by the iconic wine bible, “Bordeaux and Its Wines”, edition after edition.

Think of it like the Michelin Guide of 1800s Bordeaux: if your name was in there, you were doing something right. And Château Borgeat de la Grange? Oh, it was doing everything right.
